The Benton Franklin Fair & 4-H exhibitor Clay Rottinghaus of Pasco were honored by the Lourdes Foundation as Ordinary Angels for their donations of more than $30,000 over the past five years. The money is used for mammograms and follow-up care for women without insurance.
The Poland grandchildren of Kennewick paid tribute to their late grandmother at the Benton Franklin Fair and Rodeo when they wore purple during the 2010 Mutton Bustin’ competition Friday, Aug. 27.
The Benton Franklin Fair and Western States Insurance have been proud sponsors of 2nd Harvest for the past three years. This year, the fair donated $1 for every ticket sold for the first five hours on opening day. That donation will buy nearly 9,400 pounds of food for 2nd Harvest clients.
The Benton Franklin Fair teamed with the students of the Mid-Columbia Partnership to plant Wheelbarrow Gardens. The project taught the home-schooled students what it takes to grow a crop from seed to harvest, all in the compact environs of a wheelbarrow in their homes. The program also focused on nutrition, with Chef Jason LaBarge of the Meadow Springs Country Club showing the students how to make delicious meals from their garden harvest.
We're proud to participate in Farm Fair, a program that brings 1,000 5th-graders to a two-day agriculture education event. With lots of interactive and fun ways to learn, the students leave with a whole new appreciation for agriculture.
Each year the Benton Franklin Fair & Rodeo brings the fantastic Cowboy Up! assemblies to area schools. The curriculum assists with anti-bullying education and helps teach positive values. In March 2010, we visited more than 6,000 area students. Each received a free ticket to the Benton Franklin Fair along with the valuable life lessons from the assemblies.
Our Ag Education program went on the road with a two-day showcase at the Salmon Summit in Columbia Park.
More than 4,000 students participated, learning about stewardship and convservation along with science education. Our program included the popular faux milk cows and a goat named Mudget.
